Rivers Needs No Governor To Mobilise For Tinubu’s Re-election — Wike

todayFebruary 8, 2026

Background

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that the people of Rivers State do not need a sitting governor to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Wike made the statement on Saturday in Port Harcourt during the commissioning of the Rivers State Renewed Hope buses, Ambassadors’ headquarters, which houses Majority FM 89.5, a situation room and offices.

Commending the state coordinator of the group, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, Wike said Rivers State was fully mobilised and committed to Tinubu’s second-term bid, describing the state as a “no-go area” for opposition forces.

According to him, all 23 local government areas and zonal coordinators in the state have been inaugurated, a move he said demonstrated Rivers State’s firm political stance before Nigerians and the global audience.

Wike stressed that Rivers State’s support for Tinubu was not based on rhetoric but on visible action, noting that the establishment of a functional secretariat and logistics base showed practical commitment.

He said the state has the political structure required for mobilisation, including senators, members of the National and State Assemblies, council chairmen, and party leaders across both the APC and PDP.

“We don’t need a governor to mobilise for Mr President,” Wike said, adding that genuine political support requires sacrifice and commitment without dependence on presidential resources.

Recalling the 2023 election, Wike said Rivers people freely made their choice without pressure, expressing confidence that the same resolve would be sustained in 2027 if Tinubu indicates interest in re-running.

He urged the coordinator to begin the inauguration of ward and unit coordinators, stressing that grassroots engagement was key to sustaining political momentum and public support.

Earlier, Ambassador Desmond Akawor thanked Wike for his leadership and support, revealing that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors movement has been fully established across all 23 local governments of Rivers State.

Akawor also described Wike’s political approach as “AI politics,” which he said reflects strategic thinking, innovation, and effective mobilisation.
