As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s digital economy and create a more secure environment for business innovation, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen the enforcement of data privacy and protection in the telecommunications industry.
In a statement, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr. Aminu Maida emphasises that robust data protection and privacy frameworks are increasingly critical to the long-term sustainability of the communications sector.
According to the statement, the effective regulation of data usage would enhance consumer and investor confidence, drive innovation, and support economic growth, particularly as Nigeria deepens its participation in the artificial intelligence driven digital economy.
The National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, explains that effective implementation of its commission’s regulatory framework are core pillars of the NDPC’s approach to regulating data protection and safeguarding privacy.
It stresses that NDPC partnership with the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC would enhance effective data governance in the communications sector, as well as build capacity in areas of mutual regulatory interest to strengthen Nigeria’s data protection ecosystem.
