FCT 2026 : INEC Calls On Eligible Voters To Participate Fully

Background

The Independent National Electoral commission INEC has called on eligible voters in the Federal Capital Territory FCT to come out en mass and participate fully in this month’s Area Council Election.

INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan made the call today while monitoring the Commission’s Mock Accreditation and Voting Centers in Abuja where he expressed concern over the low turnout of voters for the exercise holding in 289 selected polling units across the Six Area Councils.

Professor Joash Amupitan who emphasized the need for Nigerians to participate in the nation’s Democratic process said election was the means for people to elect those that will protect their interest.

He therefore called on Political Parties to embark on aggressive campaign to support INEC for eligible voters to come out and vote for candidates of their choice in the February 21 Area Council Election.

” INEC will not go and be dragging voters to come out, it is the duty of political parties to sensitize their followers to come out on election day and vote for candidates of their choice.”

At some polling units visited in Garki and Wuse in Abuja Municipal Area Council and Dutse and Ushafa in Bwari Area Council, Professor Joash Amupitan commended the functionality of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems deployed for the Mock election saying the commission would do everything possible to conduct free and fair election in February.

He said INEC senior officials were deployed to all the selected polling units to enable the management see for themselves the effectiveness and functionality of the BVAS for necessary action before the February 21 polls.

According to INEC, 1,680,515 Registered Voters are expected to cast their votes in 2,822 polling Units across the Six Area Council to elect 62 councillors and Six Chairmanship candidates.

INEC Chairman also used the opportunity to visit some Centers where the commission was conducting training for some ad hoc staff in preparation for the conduct of the FCT Area Council Election.
