Insecurity : Nigeria, UK Commit To Stronger Defence Cooperation

todayFebruary 6, 2026

Background

Nigeria and the United Kingdom have renewed their commitment to stronger defence cooperation aimed at tackling emerging security challenges.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Oluyede, stated this during a meeting with the UK High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Richard Montgomery, at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

General Oluyede praised the UK for its continued support to the Armed Forces of Nigeria, especially in professional military education, specialised training and operational capacity development.

He noted that the partnership remains important to Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen national and regional security.

The Defence Chief also reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to continuous professional development and called for expanded collaboration, particularly in emerging security areas and intelligence support, to boost operational effectiveness.

On his part, Dr Montgomery congratulated General Oluyede on his appointment and acknowledged the progress recorded in defence cooperation between both countries.

He reaffirmed the UK’s readiness to deepen defence ties with Nigeria, stressing the shared responsibility of both nations in promoting regional stability, addressing new security threats and building sustainable military capacity.

The engagement focused on strengthening operational and strategic cooperation between Nigeria and the UK in response to changing regional and global security threats.
