Road Accidents Increase By 9% In 2025 – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC says Ten Thousand Four Hundred and Forty Six accidents were recorded across the country in the Year 2025 which represents over Nine percent increase compared to the 2024 statistics.

The FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed who rolled out the figures while addressing newsmen in Abuja on the 2025 ember months campaign said the number of persons killed in road accidents however declined from Five thousand Four twenty one to Five Thousand Two Hundred and Eighty nine representing a Two point Four percent reduction when compared to the 2024 figures.

Mallam Shehu Mohammed also explained that the step up enforcement in 2025 led to the increase in number of traffic offenders arrested.

He attributed the reduction in the number of deaths to improvement in the rescue operation and strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.

According to him, Kaduna – Zaria,-Kano – Katsina Abuja – Zuba -Lokoja and Jos- Bauchi -Gombe
Corridors recorded the highest number of road accidents which he attributed to high volume of traffic and poor attitude of road users most especially commercial drivers.

The FRSC Boss said all Commands have been directed to establish Crash Intelligence Desk with increased number of deployment of personnel to all the identified high volume traffic corridors across the country.

He maintained that the Corps would Concentrate more on the Big Five Offences responsible for over Seventy Percent of fatal and serious crashes.

 

The Offences are speed violation, dangerous driving drunk or drugs impared driving, wrong way driving and overloading.

He noted that the Corps this year would strengthen its public enlightened campaigns shifting from general awareness to behavioural -change communications with segmented messaging for commercial drivers, private motorists, motorcyclists and fleet operators anchored on real word consequences.

The FRSC Corps Marshal emphasized the need for religious and community leaders as well opinion leaders to assist in educating road users at the grass roots on the consequences and effects of dangerous driving on social economic development.

Mallam Shehu Mohammed commended the tremendous assistance from President Bola Tinubu which he said has enhanced the operations of FRSC nationwide.

“I also wish to place on record the deep appreciation of the Corps to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his unwavering support, strategic guidance, and policy backing extended to the Federal Road Safety Corps over the past years. We are equally grateful to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for the strong institutional support and coordination that have enhanced our operational effectiveness.”

“This collective support has been pivotal to the strengthening of the Corps’ capacity, professionalism, and resolve in the discharge of its statutory mandate.”

He urged stakeholders in the transport sector and motorists to always obey traffic rules and give maximum cooperation to FRSC for effective traffic management across the country.
