DHQ Commits To Keeping Nigerians Informed On Military Operations

todayJanuary 22, 2026

Background

The Defence Headquarters has reaffirmed its commitment to keeping Nigerians informed about military operations, as the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major-General Michael Onoja, led a media delegation to the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) SOROH in Bayelsa State.

The visit formed part of an ongoing media engagement under Operation DELTA SAFE, aimed at showcasing the efforts of security forces in curbing crude oil theft, illegal bunkering, and other criminal activities across the Niger Delta.

Major-General Onoja explained that the Armed Forces consider public communication a critical aspect of operations, stressing that Nigerians deserve to understand what the military is doing, why such actions are necessary, and the challenges personnel face in difficult operational environments.

He noted that the visit was approved by the Chief of Defence Staff to enable journalists to observe operations directly and report objectively to the public.

Commending the officers and men of NNS SOROH, the Director praised their role in securing waterways and reducing oil-related crimes in the area.

He added that the inclusion of the media was deliberate, allowing journalists to interact with personnel, observe activities firsthand, and respond to public concerns through factual reporting.

In his remarks, the Commander of NNS SOROH, Commodore Omobamidele Akinbami welcomed the Defence Media Team and described the visit as another step towards strengthening transparency and civil-military relations.

He highlighted the improved working relationship between the Navy and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Bayelsa State, which has helped ensure more balanced and accurate coverage of naval operations.

The Commander explained that the unit documents its operations in line with Defence Headquarters’ directives, with embedded media personnel providing verifiable records when allegations arise.

He noted that the use of modern technology, including drones and surveillance tools, has enhanced operational efficiency, reduced response time, and eased manpower demands.

While acknowledging challenges such as limited platforms and assets, he said strong collaboration among security agencies in Bayelsa State has significantly improved security outcomes.

He also revealed that the dismantling of a major pipeline vandalism syndicate last year led to a sharp decline in pipeline explosions, with sustained operations continuing to yield positive results.

The media team also visited selected operational areas to gain firsthand insight into the terrain, security challenges, and ongoing naval efforts under Operation DELTA SAFE.
