The Nigerian Air Force has raised concerns over the increasingly sophisticated tactics employed by criminal networks involved in oil theft and related crimes in the Niger Delta, stressing the need for improved resources, community cooperation and strategic communication to counter the threat.
Commander of the One Hundred and Fifteen Special Operations Group, Port Harcourt, Group Captain Abdulafeez Opaleye, said illegal operators now siphon crude oil through long hoses running several kilometres from pipelines into hidden locations within communities, making detection and interception more difficult.
He noted that while efforts are underway to boost manpower, effective operations require well-trained and properly equipped personnel.
Group Captain Opaleye explained that progress is being made through improved training, better coordination and locally driven initiatives, adding that sustained government support remains vital.

He emphasised that community engagement is central to success, noting that closer cooperation with host communities enhances intelligence sharing and isolates criminal elements.
He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism and discipline, warning that any personnel found engaging in criminal activities would face decisive action.
According to him, the military’s objective is to protect national assets, ensure safety and create a secure environment for economic growth.
Also speaking, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, described the media as essential partners in national security, stressing the importance of accurate reporting and strategic communication in countering misinformation.
He urged closer military–media collaboration, noting that security is a collective responsibility requiring the involvement of all segments of society to achieve lasting peace and stability.
