The Labour Party has rejected the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja which recognised a Caretaker Committee led by former Minister of Finance, Esther Nenadi Usman.
The party, under the leadership of Comrade Julius Abure, says it will immediately appeal the ruling, describing it as a contradiction of the Supreme Court’s position on political party leadership.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.
The statement says the judgment misinterpreted an earlier verdict of the Supreme Court, which had clearly stated that courts have no authority to appoint leaders for political parties, as leadership matters remain internal party affairs.
It also expresses concern over what it described as unusual developments surrounding the handling of the case and alleged that its opponents had been celebrating the judgment even before it was delivered.
According to the statement, the ruling ignored the outcome of its National Convention held in March 2024, which produced the current leadership before the expiration of the previous executive’s tenure.
The statement insists that there is no vacuum in its leadership and maintains that its National Working Committee remains the authentic leadership of the party.
It urges members to remain calm, assuring that it will pursue justice through lawful means at the Court of Appeal.
The statement also warns that it is not for sale and would not surrender its leadership to what it described as external influence or financial pressure.
