The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has called on stakeholders in the agriculture sector to unite in tackling Nigeria’s food security challenges.
Speaking in Abuja at the Annual General meeting of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, Mr Kalu described agriculture as central to the country’s future.
He noted that jobs created in the sector help feed households and keep young people productively engaged, thereby reducing unemployment and migration pressures.
The Deputy Speaker urged farmers to organise themselves, embrace modern technology and improve productivity, while calling on the government to establish structured dialogue with agricultural leaders and develop comprehensive plans for key commodities.
He also appealed to state governments to increase budgetary allocations to agricultural infrastructure and adopt data-driven investment strategies.
Mr Kalu further encouraged the private sector to invest in processing, logistics and market systems, and to work in partnership with smallholder farmers.
He said achieving food security would require collective action from government, farmers, businesses and communities, adding that while Nigeria has the resources and policy framework needed, it lacks a unified will.
