SDP Holds Night Of Tributes To Honour Late Akwashiki

todayJanuary 15, 2026

Background

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has described the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki as a shining star whose life was defined by honour, compassion and selfless service to humanity.

National Chairman of the party, Professor Sadiq Gombe, made this known at an evening of tributes organised by the party’s National Working Committee in Lafia, Nasarawa State.

Professor Gombe said the death of Senator Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate, is a profound loss not only to his family and the party, but to the entire nation.

He noted that the late senator was widely respected across political, ethnic and religious divides because of his principled leadership, accountability and deep commitment to the welfare of his constituents.

The SDP National Chairman revealed that shortly before his death, Senator Akwashiki had expressed concern about his failing health and even considered stepping aside to ensure effective representation for his people — a decision he described as a rare display of patriotism and responsibility.

Professor Gombe prayed for Allah’s forgiveness and mercy upon the late senator and asked God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.

Other speakers, including political leaders, traditional rulers and party stakeholders, paid glowing tributes to Senator Akwashiki, describing him as one of Nasarawa State’s most impactful lawmakers since 1999.

The late senator died at the age of 52 at an Indian hospital.

He was first elected into the Senate in 2019 and re-elected in 2023 on the platform of the SDP.

The programme ended with prayers for peace, unity and progress in Nasarawa State and Nigeria at large.
