FG Commits To Increase Capacity Of Armed Forces Technologically

todayJanuary 13, 2026

Background

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa, rtd has underscored the Federal Government’s resolve to strengthen Nigeria’s Armed Forces through local production of military hardware and increased technological capacity.

Speaking at a National Symposium and Lecture Series in Abuja to commemorate the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, the Minister said the ongoing reforms in the defence sector are aimed at building a force that is professional, resilient and capable of supporting national development alongside its primary security responsibilities.

He noted that Nigeria’s defence system is gradually becoming more self-sufficient and transparent, driven by the fusion of indigenous expertise with modern technology.

According to him, this shift is critical to sustaining recent operational gains recorded by the Armed Forces across different theatres of operation.

General Musa expressed confidence in the ability of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to neutralise threats to national security, assuring Nigerians that the military remains committed to safeguarding lives, property and the nation’s sovereignty.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Richard Pheelangwa, described the symposium as a moment of reflection, stressing that true national strength is anchored on sacrifice, shared ideals and dedication to service, rather than military hardware alone.

He reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ pledge to maintain professionalism while contributing to peace and stability both within Nigeria and beyond its borders.

In a keynote presentation titled “Securing Nigeria’s Future: The Armed Forces and National Development,” former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai rtd, highlighted the non-combat contributions of the military, noting its role in production, infrastructure support and the creation of a safe environment for economic activities.

He urged the Federal Government to enhance the capacity of the Nigeria Police through training and modern equipment, allowing the military to refocus on its constitutional role of defending Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

The symposium drew the attendance of the Chief of Defence Staff, alongside serving and retired Service Chiefs.
