FCT Councils Election Has Nothing To Do With Leadership Structure – LP

todayJanuary 10, 2026

Background

The Labour Party has clarified that the recent statement issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on the FCT Area Council election has nothing to do with the leadership of the party.

This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja.

The statement says INEC’s statement only explained why it temporarily withheld access codes for Labour Party candidates ahead of the February 18, 2026 FCT Area Council election, due to ongoing court cases from previous elections.

According to the statement, INEC did not make any statement questioning the party’s leadership structure.

It stresses that the party accuses a suspended member and former Senator, Darlington Nwokocha, of misrepresenting the INEC statement and falsely claiming to speak for a non-existent caretaker committee.

The statement says under the new leadership of INEC, the Commission has restored proper engagement with the party, including participation in consultative meetings, monitoring of party congresses, and issuance of candidate upload codes for the Ekiti and Osun governorship elections.

According to the statement the party also states that no court has removed Julius Abure as National Chairman, stressing that the Supreme Court only ruled that party leadership matters are internal affairs and not for the courts to decide.

The statement therefore calls on Nigerians to ignore what it described as misleading information and assured that the party remains united and fully functional.

The statement adds that the party committed to providing Nigerians with a credible alternative for national development.
