Motorists plying the Lokoja–Okene road have appealed to the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, to urgently carry out palliative repairs on the Kabba Junction section of the highway to ease travel difficulties and safeguard the health of passengers and residents of communities along the route.
Speaking with our correspondent, a taxi driver, Rufai Sani, said the Kabba Junction–Irepkeni section of the road was scraped and graded several months ago but abandoned without further construction work.
He noted that the delay had led to severe deterioration of the road, forcing motorists to endure rough conditions while inhaling large amounts of dust.
Another driver lamented that the poor state of the road was causing frequent damage to vehicles, particularly the wheels, resulting in increased repair costs for motorists.
A passenger, Mr Taiye Adewale, also decried the prolonged delay in completing the reconstruction of the Okene–Lokoja dual carriageway, which has dragged on for several years.
He stressed the need for the federal government to prioritise road infrastructure and award contracts only to competent and committed companies.
He further observed that while one carriageway of the road has already become dilapidated, construction work on the other carriageway has been stalled, worsening the hardship faced by motorists and commuters.
