The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Operation Sweep has intensified efforts to curb the activities of miscreants and criminal elements across Abuja during the Christmas and New Year festivities.
Director of the FCT Department of Security Services, Adamu Gwary,
who was represented by Dr. Olumiji Peter, visited strategic locations including Apo Bridge, Area 1 Roundabout, Julius Berger Junction, and Utako Motor Park to sensitise operators and residents on security measures.
He said the FCTA, in collaboration with security agencies, has deployed men and officers to identified black spots to ensure tight security throughout the festive period.
He urged operators of motor parks and event centres to ensure that individuals, especially motorists without proper identification, are not allowed to operate within their premises.
According to him, the ongoing Operation Sweep is aimed at flushing out miscreants and criminal elements to ensure residents enjoy the yuletide season in peace.
“We are going round the city in continuation of Operation Sweep to ensure that the FCT is free of miscreants and criminal elements. This yuletide season is meant for families and friends to come together and enjoy,” Gwary said.
He added that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Nyesom Wike, has issued a marching order to all security agencies under Operation Sweep to decisively tackle all forms of criminality.
Gwary further disclosed that the administration would sustain the monitoring of motor parks and dismantle illegal ones, which could serve as hideouts for criminal gangs, including ‘one-chance’ syndicates.
He also noted that the FCT Police Command has carried out massive deployment of officers across strategic locations in the city following directives from the Commissioner of Police.
Meanwhile, the Head of the Enforcement Unit of the FCT Social Development Secretariat, Ukachi Adebayo, said the department has evacuated 481 beggars within the last two weeks as part of the security measures.
She explained that those apprehended are currently in holding centres where they are profiled, catered for, and offered vocational training for those willing to acquire skills.
On his part, the Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Utako Motor Park, Adamu Abubakar, said motorists without proper identification are not allowed to operate in the park.
He assured that the union would continue to profile all members, particularly new entrants, to enhance security during and beyond the festive season.
