In a significant measure to mitigate the effects of the present economic challenges in the country, the National Human Rights Commission in collaboration with a Civil Society Organisation, Thelema Lion Foundation has distributed relief items to five hundred vulnerable households in the Federal Capital Territory.
The Executive Secretary ES, National Human Rights Commission, Dr. Tony Ojukwu said the commission recognizes the significance of food security, nutrition being a human rights issue because the security and welfare of the people constitute the primary purpose of the government and remains fundamental to human dignity and well being.
Ojukwu, who stated this at the 4th Annual Seminar on Zero Hunger and Free Food palliative Distribution and Empowerment in Abuja, explained that the annual seminar organized by the Thelema Lion Foundation was a commendable initiative that aligns with the commission’s mandate to protect and promote human rights in Nigeria.
“The commission was established under the National Human Rights Act and empowered to promote, protect and enforce the rights of all persons living in Nigeria by providing assistance to victims of human rights violation through legal support, psychological services and empowerment initiatives such as this.”
“Today, we celebrate a remarkable milestone in our collective journey towards social justice, inclusion and empowerment in collaboration with the Thelema Lion Foundation, it is not merely an act of compassion but, reflection of our statutory mandate to restore the dignity of men and women.”
“This program goes beyond just donation of economic resources and free food palliative but symbolizes hope and clear message to all beneficiaries that you’re not alone your dignity is intact, courage recognized, and your future matters.”
“Our partnership with the Thelema foundation is a clear example of how collaboration can deliver meaningful impact to the most vulnerable members of the society, particularly survivors of human rights violations. We will continue to advocate for human rights based inclusive and gender-responsive policies, programs that prioritize vulnerable populations, Ojukwu added.”
On her part, the Chief Executive Director and Founder, Thelema Foundation, Dr Ifeoma Agu reiterated the foundation’s commitment towards complementing the effort of the government by ensuring that the most vulnerable households especially women and the girl-child are empowered for self reliance.
“Some of these women were given sewing machines, cash grant of N50,000 and about 300 others were also trained in different skills and were later empowered last year before this present palliative distribution and empowerment program, so there has been so many impacts.”
“We are not stopping there, Thelema Lion Movement will continue to partner and join forces with NHRC, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, NDLA Nutrition International and other technical partners to create a Nigeria where everyone will have access to food, shelter and opportunities.”
‘Through socio-economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, educational support, and healthcare initiatives, we are equipping women with skills, knowledge and resources needed to break out of the shackles of poverty to achieve their dreams.”
“We are happy to see empowered women empowering others, and our ripple effect is been felt across Nigeria and ready to make positive impact in their various communities in the country and beyond.”
