The Chief Executive Officer of the Elite Athletes and Podium Board, Yusuf Alli has played down expectations of a large medal haul for Nigeria at the fourth African Youth Games in Angola, insisting the competition is primarily aimed at developing young talents rather than chasing immediate success.
Alli who monitored the performances of Nigeria’s contingent at the event, noted that while the results have been encouraging, his excitement goes beyond podium finishes.
The former Commonwealth Games long jump champion also expressed satisfaction with the age profile of the Nigerian team.
Alli added that the African Youth Games could serve as a foundation for Nigeria’s next generation of elite performers, with long-term benefits expected to follow if the development pathway is sustained.
The African Youth Games is a continental multi-sport tournament held every four years to complement the Africa Games.
The current edition in Angola is the fourth edition of the competition since its inception in 2010.
Alli, a three-time Olympian, won gold at the 1990 Commonwealth Games and still holds the Nigerian long jump record after posting 8.27m at the 1989 African Championships in Lagos.
