Twenty secondary schools gathered at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Yola, for a debate marking the 16 Days Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, GBV.
The programme was organised by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in partnership with the Office of the Governor’s Wife, the Fresh Air Pro-Life Empowerment Foundation.
The Governor’s Wife, Dr. Lami Fintiri, told the students that the fight against gender-based violence requires collective effort from all sectors of society.
She said the increasing cases of abuse make it necessary to create more safe centres where women and girls can receive proper care.
Dr. Lami also warned about the dangers of cyberbullying and fake social media accounts, which she described as emerging threats to young people.
She explained that the debate was designed to help students understand the realities of gender-based violence and to encourage them to pursue their future with confidence and dignity.
The Governor’s Wife appealed to religious and traditional leaders to use their positions in addressing the issue.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Neido Tanyishi Kofulto, commended Dr. Lami Fintiri for her consistent support for women and youths.
According to her, the competition was timely and reminded participants that gender-based violence affects the entire society, not just women and girls.
She urged stakeholders to support this year’s theme: “Unite to End Violence Against Women and Girls.”
Medical experts and development partners, including the Medical Director of the Specialist Hospital, Dr. Dauda Wadinga, and the UNFPA representative, Dr. Danladi Idris, praised the state government for its commitment to humanitarian service, saying the interventions of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and his wife continue to make a lasting impact on residents.
