Lawmakers Mourn Senator Ezea

todayNovember 19, 2025

Background

The House of Representatives is deeply saddened by the passing of Distinguished Senator Okechukwu Ezea, the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th National Assembly.

According to an announcement by his family, the Senator passed away late Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at the age of 62 after a brief illness.

Until his demise, he served as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committees on Cooperation and Integration in Africa and NEPAD, and Culture and Creative Economy.

Senator Ezea, a first time lawmaker elected to the Red Chamber in February 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party, was also a lawyer, entrepreneur, administrator and committed party man.

He was known for purposeful contributions and statesmanship, and his legislative work reflected a strong commitment to institutional development, national cohesion and the advancement of cultural and continental integration.

The House received the news of his passing during Wednesday’s plenary and was shocked by the development.

In keeping with parliamentary tradition, the House suspended legislative business for the day and adjourned plenary till next Tuesday in honour of the late Senator.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD, GCON, has described the death of Senator Ezea as heartbreaking and unfortunate, calling it a huge loss not only to the Senate but to the entire 10th National Assembly.

The Speaker remarked, “Senator Ezea was a gentleman and fine lawmaker who carried out his legislative duties diligently before he fell sick.”

The Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, also described the late Senator as a committed public servant whose contributions to national development and democratic growth will remain indelible.

He added, “His death has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill, especially at a time when the country needs experienced leaders who understand the complexities of governance and the aspirations of the people.”

The House of Representatives extends heartfelt sympathies to Senator Ezea’s family, his constituents, the Government and People of Enugu State, the Senate and National Assembly as an institution. May the legacy of this fine parliamentarian, defined by leadership, humility and unwavering dedication to his people, endure. May God grant him eternal rest and comfort all who mourn him at this difficult time.
