Katsina ODF Status, Collective Efforts Of Communities, Govt – Saulawa

todayNovember 19, 2025

Background

Katsina State Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Bishir Gambo Saulawa, says the state’s new Open Defecation Free status is a major milestone achieved through the collective efforts of communities, government and development partners.

Speaking after receiving the ODF award in Abuja, Dr. Saulawa stressed that the recognition reflects the strong leadership of Governor Dikko Radda and the determination of the people of Katsina.

According to him, the achievement belongs to the entire state, emphasizing that it is the result of the hard work of communities, the WASH institutions, and all partners who stood with the state throughout the journey.

He explained that the state’s WASH policy under the Dikko Agenda played a central role in driving the reforms that led to the certification.

Dr. Saulawa said every component of the WASH policy has been implemented with sincerity stressing that what is seen today is the outcome of a clear policy direction backed by action.

On sustainability, the Commissioner assured that Katsina is committed to maintaining its new status.

“Our policy already embeds sustainability. We are determined to keep these systems functional because we want to leave a strong legacy for the next generation. Achieving ODF is one thing; sustaining it is even more important.”

Dr. Saulawa also recalled the challenges the state faced before the intervention, noting that Katsina, like many parts of the country, struggled with open defecation for years.

“Our success would not have been possible without the dedication of our WASH coordinators in every local government, the support of council chairmen, and the technical guidance from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources” he added,

The Commissioner pledged that Katsina will continue to consolidate its gains and serve as a model for other states working toward ODF certification.
