World Orphans Day : COCHIN Seeks Government’s Support For Orphanages

todayNovember 16, 2025

Background

The Coalition of Orphanages and Children’s Home In Nigeria, OCHIN, has held a national celebration for orphans in the Federal Capital Territory to mark the 2025 World Orphans Day.

World Orphans Day is being celebrated every second Monday of November to spotlight the plight, rights and welfare of orphaned and vulnerable children.

Although the official date falls on Monday, 10th of November, 2025, COCHIN decided to hold the national celebration on the 15th of November, 2025, to avoid distrupting the academic activities of the celebrants.

On the occasion in Abuja the Director Child, FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, Dr Idtis Yahaya commended COCHIN for celebrating the children.

Dr Idris Yahaya who said the FCT Administration would ensure regular monitoring and visitation to Orphanages in the Territory added that Government would continue to collaborate with COCHIN towards ensuring standards in the operations of orphanages in the nation’s capital.

Also speaking, the President of COCHIN, Senator Eze Ajoku, said the celebration was to highlight challenges confronting some orphans in the country.

Senator Eze Ajoku stated that this year’s event highlighted the theme of strengthening advocacy, collaboration and community support systems for the holistic well-being of orphans and vulnerable children in Nigeria.

He therefore called on wealthy individuals, government, Lawmakers and those into humanitarian activities to invest in orphanages and lives of vulnerable Nigerian children as some are out of school while others are roaming the streets as car cleaners and hawkers.

While also soliciting the government’s intervention and assistance for Orphanages, Senator Eze Ajoku said COCHIN would not relent in its efforts at securing a better future for orphans in the country.

Some of the orphans, Chris Adams, Sherifat Abdullahi and Bolaji Aderemi appreciated COCHIN for organizing the event for them saying it has gone a long way to make them feel good by meeting with their peers for games and other interesting activities at the Children’s Park where the event took place in Abuja.

They therefore appealed to Government at all levels to give priority to their health and educational development towards making them responsible citizens of Nigeria.

Highpoints of the event were fun activities at the park, including dance presentations by each of the orphanage homes and refreshments made available by COCHIN.
