Kaduna Govt Moves To Develop Climate Change Accountability Mechanism

todayNovember 13, 2025

Background

As part of efforts towards the effective implementation of the Kaduna state climate change policy, a technical session to develop the framework for a co-created Kaduna climate change accountability mechanism was held in Kaduna.

Speaking during the session, the permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mrs. Linda Yakubu explained that the objectives of the session are to enhance participants’ understanding of the Kaduna state climate change policy implementation framework and other related documents.

According to her, participants are to share best practices, challenges, and solutions towards a whole of society approach during the session.

She commended the work done so far in the state, saying Kaduna State came 3rd position in the climate change Governance Ranking in the country and stressed the need for more visibility and citizens’ participation.

While reassuring the ministry’s full support towards handling climate change issues, the Permanent Secretary maintained that more professionals as well as individuals and organizations would be bought to the table to ensure Kaduna State takes first position in the next governance ranking.

On their part, two Consultants who co- chaired the session, John Mutu and Hajara Mohammed explained that their aim is to enhance understanding of the Kaduna State Climate Policy 2024-2028, climate change policy implementation framework and related documents as well as support participants to collectively define the structure, functions, scope, membership, decision making process and leadership of the proposed climate change accountability mechanism.

While commending Kaduna State government for the feat attained in the climate change governance ranking which took the state from 16th position to 3rd position, the Consultants urged participants to put in their best, saying Kaduna State is capable of taking first position next year if the level of work is maintained.

The Consultants all pointed to the fact that more robust steps should be taken to ensure that all relevant stakeholders including farmers, all forms of miners, marketers, PWD’s, Professionals, the private sector among others should be fully engaged in the whole process.

Earlier, the Issue-Based Partnership Facilitator of PACE Kaduna, Mr. Victor Awomazino Asciriba, urged all participants to give in their best, saying that the Kaduna Climate Change Accountability Mechanism should out weigh other sectors since it is coming at a time, others have already done theirs, hence the lessons gained should be brought in, to get the best.

The session was organized by Partnership for Agile Governance and Climate Engagement, PACE, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the UK International Development.
