Public servants in the FCT have been advised to embark on regular routine medical checks to guard against Diabetes and other chronic illnesses.
The Director FCT Public Health Department Dr. Dan Gadzama who made the call during a medical outreach in Abuja to mark the 2025 world diabetes day, decried the alarming rise of diabetes, particularly in Africa, and stressed that the workplace is a strategic front in the battle against the disease.
Dr Gadzama revealed that a staggering seven out of ten adults with diabetes are of working age hence the need for regular checks and life style changes that would promote healthy living.
According to Dr. Gadzama, “We ask you, workplaces and employers, to build environments that allow people with diabetes to work productively, stay healthy and have dignity reducing stigma, supporting wellness, offering access to screening and care to individuals living with diabetes, we want to encourage you that you are not alone, your journey matters.”
Also, the FCT
Non-Communicable Disease Coordinator, Dr. Olubunmi Adeyemi said the sensitization ongoing in other offices in the FCT is to further encourage workers to prioritize their health even as they embark on their daily activities.

In her remark, the Acting Director, Directorate of Road Traffic Services Deborah Osho appreciated the FCT public health department for taking the campaign to public servants in their offices, stressing that the sensitization and testing for diabetes should be periodic and not just to commemorate the day.
Mrs Osho stressed further, “Our collaboration today with the FCT Department of Public Health and our Partners is not just about awareness: it is about promoting a culture of wellness, it is about promoting a culture of wellness at work.
“A healthy staff is a productive staff. When we prioritize our health we enhance our efficiency, our safety on the roads, and the quality of service we deliver to residents of the Federal Capital Territory.”
The sensitizatuon and the free testing flagoff at the Vehicle Inspectorate office, Mabushi harped on this year’s world Diabetes day theme: “Diabetes and Well-being at work” as the ailment had become a growing public health challenge killing people of productive age.
