FCT : Preparations In Top Gear For “Groovy December”

todayNovember 12, 2025

Background

The Nation’s Capital is gearing up for an unforgettable end-of-year celebration as preparations hit top gear for this year’s “Groovy December.”

The event, described as the first of its kind in Abuja, will feature over 35 exciting activities across entertainment, tourism, culture, and lifestyle.

Speaking during a news conference in Abuja, the Coordinator of Emerging Abuja Projects, Dr. Kenneth Ibe-Kalu, explained that Groovy December represents a major milestone in FCTA’s ongoing “Emerging Abuja” rebranding initiative.

He said the program aims to transform the city into a vibrant hub for tourism, culture, and entertainment for Nigerians and the global community.

“The FCT Minister has provided an enabling environment for tourism, culture, and entertainment to thrive. The approval to host Groovy December and the broader Imagine Abuja vision shows that Abuja is ready to take its place as Africa’s new capital for leisure and creativity,” Dr. Ibe-Kalu said.

According to him, the event is already attracting interest from Nigerians in the diaspora, with over 45 coordinators across Europe and America mobilizing attendees who plan to return home for the celebration.

“Many Nigerians abroad, some who haven’t been home in over 20 or 30 years, are eager to visit Abuja this December. Groovy December will be their homecoming experience, showcasing the best of our culture, music, and hospitality,” he noted.

“To ensure visitors enjoy the city to the fullest, Groovy December has secured partnership with key players in Abuja’s hospitality industry. Participating hotels will offer 25% to 50% discounts for registered guests, while restaurants, tour operators, and entertainment venues will provide special packages.

Dr. Ibe-Kalu projected that hotel occupancy will rise to about 70% during the event, significantly boosting revenue and improving earnings for hospitality workers and local businesses”.

“Tourism is life, and when tourism thrives, the economy grows. Groovy December will stimulate economic activities across Abuja from transport operators to artisans and vendors ensuring that residents also benefit from the festivities,” he added.

He confirmed that all necessary structures are in place for a smooth experience, noting that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium has been approved as one of the main venues.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has also approved Groovy December information desks at four major airports across the country to assist travelers arriving for the event.

According to Dr. Ibe-Kalu, beyond the full backing of the FCTA Security agencies, other security agencies are fully engaged to guarantee safety throughout the duration of the festival.
