The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged people in the South-East to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying it is already bringing tangible progress to the region.
Speaking at the launch of the Renewed Hope Partners in Ukwa West, Abia State, Mr Kalu said major federal initiatives from the creation of the South East Development Commission to rail and gas projects are signs of a new phase of inclusion and growth.
“The story of the South-East is changing and it is changing for good,” he told a large crowd gathered for the event. “From infrastructure to appointments and innovation, this administration is ensuring that the South-East takes its rightful place in the national journey of growth.”
Among the government’s efforts, Mr Kalu cited the ₦150bn South-East Investment Company, the revival of the Port Harcourt–Maiduguri rail corridor, and the expansion of gas processing plants in Imo State.
He said the compressed natural gas programme could save the country ₦2tn monthly in fuel imports.
On agriculture, he said land has been allocated in Abia, Ebonyi and Enugu for large-scale farming under the national food security plan, with international partnerships supporting cassava, rice and palm oil production.
He added that ₦45.6bn in student loans has already been accessed by students from the South-East, with more funds to be released soon.
The Deputy Speaker also announced plans to establish Renewed Hope Councils across local governments to ensure that federal programmes reach communities directly.
Mr Kalu has launched the Renewed Hope Partners initiative in five Abia local governments as part of a broader push to mobilise grassroots support for President Tinubu’s policies and a possible second-term bid in 2027.
