Rtd Sergeant-at-Arms Reflects On 33yrs Guarding Nigeria’s Legislative Symbol

todayOctober 31, 2025

Background

The former mace bearer of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Aku Jethro, has revealed that a coordinated intelligence network within the National Assembly helped prevent possible snatching of the legislative mace during his 33 years of service.

Jethro made the revelation in Abuja during a farewell ceremony held in his honour following his retirement from the legislature.

He served in the Sergeant-at-Arms Department, responsible for maintaining order in the chamber and protecting the House’s symbol of authority.

He explained that over the years, the department developed an internal surveillance and intelligence system to monitor proceedings and detect potential disruptions.

The structure, he said, helped avert attempts to seize the mace during tense plenary sessions and political disagreements.

“The mace, which stands before the Speaker during plenary sittings, represents the authority of the legislature. Its removal or seizure renders parliamentary decisions void.”

Jethro said the National Assembly had faced tense moments but relied on teamwork and vigilance to safeguard the chamber’s integrity.

He also advised lawmakers to strengthen oversight and do more to uphold transparency, accountability, and public confidence in the legislature, adding that collaboration among the three arms of government is crucial to democracy.

As he bowed out of service, Jethro said he would deeply miss his colleagues in the Sergeant-at-Arms Department, noting that their understanding and cooperation were vital in maintaining decorum in the House.

Lawmakers and staff, including member from Plateau State, Daniel Asama praised his discipline and professionalism, describing him as a man who carried out his duties with dedication and precision.

He was later presented with a plaque of honour for his meritorious service to the legislature.
