Amid rising insecurity and
daily reports of violent crimes, in the Federal Capital Territory, the House of Representatives called for an investigation into
the $460 Million Closed-Circuit Television, CCTV, project in Abuja.
The decision followed a motion sponsored member representing
Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, Mr Amobi Ogah.
In his lead debate, Mr Ogah, who expressed concern that despite the loan secured for the project, the CCTV system remains non-functional, while crime continues to rise across Abuja.
Ogah recalled that in 2010, the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, through the then Finance Minister, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, signed a $460 million loan agreement with China EXIM Bank for the project.
According to him, the contract was awarded to ZTE Communications of China as part of efforts to enhance surveillance and improve security within the capital city.
However, the lawmaker noted that Nigeria continues to service the loan with no visible result from the project, describing the situation as “a lose-lose nightmare” for the country.
“The government’s most important responsibility is the protection of lives and property,” Ogah said.
He lamented that the CCTV cameras have failed to deliver on their purpose despite the heavy financial commitment.
Adopting the motion, the House resolved to set up an adhoc committee to investigate the project’s execution, funding, and current status and to report back with recommendations.
