Nigeria and Algeria have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen ties between their parliaments and promote democratic governance.
The agreement was signed in Algiers by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr Abbas Tajudeen, and the Speaker of Algeria’s People’s National Assembly.
A statement in Abuja notes that the deal aims to boost parliamentary exchanges, support law-making, and encourage collaboration on governance and the rule of law.
According to the statement, both sides agreed to form a joint parliamentary committee to serve as a platform for dialogue and cooperation.
The committee will coordinate visits, share legislative experiences, and support development programmes between the two countries.
The MoU also calls for greater cooperation within regional and international parliamentary bodies such as the Pan-African Parliament, the African Parliamentary Union, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
During his visit, Dr Abbas laid a wreath at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Algiers to honour Algeria’s fallen heroes.
He is also expected to hold talks with several top Algerian officials, including Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf, Minister of Hydrocarbons and Mines Mohamed Arkab, and Minister of Energy and Renewable Energies, Mourad Adjal.
