NPF Cautions Protest Groups Against Vandalism Of Public Infrastructure

todayOctober 18, 2025

Background

The Nigeria Police Force NPF has cautioned all protest groups to strictly comply with a subsisting court order restricting demonstrations around key national institutions in Abuja, warning that anyone who disobeys the directive or causes public disorder will face the full weight of the law.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining peace and security in line with constitutional provisions.

The statement while acknowledging citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly and expression, stressed that such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the confines of the law.

According to the statement, the court’s decision was aimed at ensuring public safety and order, not at suppressing constitutional freedoms.

It warned that anyone or group that attempts to hijack protests for violent purposes including inciting unrest, carrying weapons, vandalizing property, or engaging in acts of terrorism will be arrested and prosecuted.

It also cautioned individuals using social media to incite violence that digital evidence would be utilized in investigations and prosecutions.

The statement emphasized that the inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has directed the FCT Commissioner of Police and relevant operational commands to enforce the court’s order, maintain visible deployments across strategic locations, and safeguard lives and property in the Federal Capital Territory.

The statement further advised organisers and participants to respect the law, avoid provocative behaviour, and channel their grievances through lawful means.

It assured law-abiding citizens of adequate security measures, urging residents to go about their normal activities without fear, while warning that anyone found violating the court order will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
