2027 : Anglican Church Frowns At Premature Political Campaigns

todayOctober 18, 2025

Background

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, has called on the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, SAN, to halt premature political campaigns against the 2027 general election.

According to the Church, early politicking is distracting public office-holders from addressing pressing national issues especially security crises.

The President Anglican Mother’s Union and Women’s Guild, Mrs Angela Ndukuba made the call while addressing the 26th Annual Diocesan Women’s Conference, themed “The Unchangeable Promises of God: The Covenant keeping God,” in Abuja.

“It is surprising that our politicians at all levels are already engaging in the 2027 electoral campaign even before their second anniversary.

He stressed the need for the Electoral Body to call politicians to order to face governance and adhere strictly to electoral guidelines.

While congratulating the new INEC boss, Mrs Ndukuba assured that the church would pray that God would use him to bring sanity to the nation’s electoral system.

While speaking on the Farmer-Herder Crisis, Mrs Ndukuba highlighted the gendered impact of the violence, saying women are afraid to go to farm in many parts of the country during the farming season for the fear of being gang raped or even losing their lives.

She described the destruction of farms by cattle as a very wicked act and linked the clashes to the nation’s food scarcity.

According to the Anglican women leader, in some communities, herders have occupied some ancestral villages, forcing indigenes into Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps when there is no civil war.

While commending the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, for improvements within the City center, she appealed for intervention on some rural roads across the Six area Councils.

Amidst criticism of national affairs, Ndukuba encouraged the women to hold onto God’s promises in the face of adversity.
