todayOctober 17, 2025

Background

Participants at the just concluded Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative, MAMII, Activation workshop in Kogi State have been charged to be ambassadors of safe motherhood.

The State Commissioner for Health, Doctor Adams Adeiza Abdulazeez, made the call at the end of a five-day workshop and distribution of delivery kits and micro nutrients to women in Lokoja.

The Commissioner, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr Steven Momoh, explained that the success of the workshop
would not be in the number of papers presented or sessions held, but in the
lives they touch and the positive changes they bring to maternal and child health across the State.

He reiterated the Ministry’s readiness to sustain the momentum through the implementation of evidence-based interventions, continuous training of health personnel, and improved coordination with the local government health authorities.

Doctor Abdulazeez commended the Minister of Health and Social Welfare and other supporting agencies and partners for their continued
technical and financial support towards strengthening the state’s healthcare delivery system.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, stressed that the initiative reflects their collective commitment to ending preventable maternal and newborn deaths across Nigeria.

Represented by the Director, Family Health Department, Doctor Ovuoraye John, Professor Pate maintained that
every mother deserves a safe delivery, and every newborn deserves a healthy start.

While noting that MAMII was designed to strengthen quality care, improve timely referrals, and promote community participation in saving lives, the Minister applauded the Kogi State Government, and all partners for their leadership and dedication to the cause.

The National Coordinator of MAMII, Doctor Dayo Adeyanju, who was represented by the National SWAp Officer, Mrs Sariat Awudu while handing over the work plan to the Health Commissioner, stated that the work plan was not just a document but a guide to eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Mortality by twenty, twenty seven in the State.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Mariam Isah stated that their antenatal, scans, and tests at the hospital were free, describing their experience as smooth and encouraging.
