The House of Representatives Public Accounts, Committee, PAC, has ordered the Jos Electricity Distribution Company to pay 72 billion naira to the federal government within 60 days.
The directive follows an ongoing investigation into over 2.6 trillion naira in debt owed by the power distribution company to the Federation Account.
Chairman of the
Committee, Mr Bamidele Salam, issued the order during a public hearing in Abuja after reviewing audit reports from the Auditor-General of the Federation and documents submitted by the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading company, NBET.
According to NBET, Jos DisCo’s debt stood at about N162 billion in 2020, but the company admitted owing N72 billion as of May this year.
The committee directed both parties to reconcile a disputed 27 billion naira within 21 days and report back.
Mr Salam warned that the government would no longer tolerate non-remittance of funds by electricity companies, stressing that public money must be returned to the Federation Account to meet national obligations.
In a related development, the committee also ordered the Kano Electricity Distribution Company to pay N40.7 billion which is half of its verified N81.5 billion debt within 30 days and provide evidence of payment to the National Assembly.
