INEC Assures Credible Governorship Election In Anambra

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it is ready to conduct a credible, transparent, and inclusive governorship election in Anambra State scheduled for next month.

Acting Chairman of INEC, Mrs May Agbamuche-Mbu stated this during the third quarterly consultative meeting with leaders of political parties in Abuja.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu said the commission remained committed to deepening Nigeria’s democracy through constant engagement and collaboration with all stakeholders.

She explained that the consultative forum, the third for the year, was part of the Commission’s continuous dialogue with political parties to strengthen mutual understanding and promote confidence in the electoral process.

“The Commission is working assiduously with security agencies and stakeholders at all levels to ensure a peaceful and credible Anambra Governorship Election”.

“We have completed ten out of the thirteen key activities in the timetable and are strictly on course to deliver as scheduled.”

The Acting Chairman disclosed that all non-sensitive materials for the election had been delivered to the State, while voter education and sensitisation were ongoing across all Local Government Areas.

She reminded political parties to adhere strictly to the campaign timelines and other provisions of the electoral timetable.

She also provided updates on other electoral activities, including the recently concluded bye-elections across 12 States on 16th August 2025, and preparations for the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council Elections scheduled for 21st February 2026, the Ekiti Governorship Election on 20th June 2026, and the Osun Governorship Election on 8th August 2026.

On the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, which resumed nationwide on 18th August 2025 for online pre-registration and 25th August for in-person registration, Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu said the exercise had received an impressive response from citizens.

The Acting Chairman further revealed that the Commission had received 171 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, out of which 14 met the constitutional and legal requirements to proceed to the next stage.

Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu thanked the political parties for their cooperation and constructive engagement, assuring them that INEC would remain steadfast in its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and the protection of the people’s mandate.

In his goodwill message, the National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Dr. Yusuf Mamman Dantalle pledged IPAC’s continued partnership with the Commission in consolidating democratic gains, while urging INEC to sustain the reforms initiated under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure.

Dr. Dantalle also called for expedited legislative action on the proposed constitutional and electoral reforms, including the establishment of an Electoral Offences Commission, special seats for women, and the transfer of Local Government election responsibilities to INEC to ensure a uniform standard nationwide.
