The Global Igbo Foundation Initiatives (GIFI) has condemned the demolition of shops and buildings belonging to Igbo traders at the Lagos International Trade Fair Complex in Ojo.
The demolition, reportedly carried out under the supervision of Lagos State government agencies, left thousands of traders homeless and destroyed businesses, causing severe economic hardship for families.
In a statement in Abuja, GIFI’s president, Dr. Lois Jonathan,
described the action as “unjust, insensitive, and inhumane,” noting that some traders had fulfilled all obligations, including rent, levies, and taxes, before their properties were destroyed.
The foundation called on the Lagos government to halt further demolitions and to establish a review committee to investigate the exercise and ensure compensation for affected traders.
It also urged the federal government, the National Assembly, and the presidency to intervene to protect constitutional rights and prevent further perceived injustices.
GIFI appealed to the National Human Rights Commission, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to investigate the demolitions and hold responsible parties accountable.
The Igbo community in Lagos has, for decades, been a vital part of the state’s economy—creating jobs, paying taxes, and contributing immensely to its commercial and industrial growth.
It is therefore disturbing that such a critical segment of the business community could be subjected to this level of disregard and economic violence.
The Global Igbo Foundation reiterates that its members are peace-loving, law-abiding citizens who believe in one Nigeria built on justice, equity, and fairness.
The group however, noted that acts of targeted demolition and economic displacement will only breed resentment and weaken national unity.
“We stand firmly in solidarity with all affected traders and demand that justice be served without delay.”
“The Forum will continue to engage relevant authorities through peaceful and lawful means until redress is achieved.”
