Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has called on political leaders and stakeholders to unite in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy through the ongoing review of the 1999 Constitution.
Speaking at a consultative session of the House Committee on Constitution Review with political party leaders in Abuja, Kalu said the process offers an opportunity to make the nation’s democracy more inclusive and effective.
“If constitutional amendments are to be legitimate, they must have your buy-in. If they are to endure, they must reflect a broad consensus that transcends party lines,” Kalu said. “We have invited you here not as adversaries, but as partners in nation-building.”
The Deputy Speaker, who chairs the committee, highlighted key reform areas including women’s representation in legislative houses, financial autonomy for local governments, and electoral process improvements.
“These are not partisan issues. These are Nigerian issues,” Kalu said.
“We all want a Nigeria where elections are credible, where women have an equal seat at the table, and where local governments work.”
He urged stakeholders to review the proposed amendment bills, consult within their parties, and present their recommendations to the committee.
Kalu said the review process aims to secure broad-based support, noting that constitutional amendments must be approved by two-thirds of the National Assembly and at least two-thirds of the State Houses of Assembly.
“This is our moment to get it right,” he said. “Together, we can build a Constitution that truly reflects the hopes, values, and aspirations of all Nigerians.”
