The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC says in the last two days it has apprehended over 250 commercial drivers for overloading and carrying of two passengers in the front seats in the Federal Capital Territory FCT.
FCT Sector Commander of FRSC Mr Felix Theman who stated this while speaking with newsmen said despite several engagements with transport union leaders to secure their cooperation, commercial taxi operators refused to comply with the national road traffic regulations and vehicle manufacturer passenger specification and load limits for every vehicle .
Mr Theman emphasized that the overloading of passengers and goods not only endanger lives by making seatbelt use impossible but places undue stress on vehicle tyres and suspension systems.
“It impairs the driver’s ability to control the vehicle effectively especially in emergency situations”.
He announced that by next week, all mobile courts in the Six Area Councils will be activated to intensify the enforcement drive and restore order to the FCT Transport Sector.
He urged passengers and commuters to support FRSC’s efforts to uphold their rights to safe and dignified transportation in the nation’s capital city.
According to him, enforcement is the most civil and effective means to ensure that safety is not compromised for convenience.
The FCT Sector Commander also warned all commercial drivers operating vehicles that fall below minimum safety standards to upgrade their vehicles or risk immediate impoundment.
