The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has called on the National Assembly to expedite action on electoral law reforms to enhance preparation for the 2027 general election.
INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who made the call while receiving the European Union Election Observation Follow-up Mission, said early passage of the law was critical to the planning of the next general election.
Professor Mahmood Yakubu explained that the Commission has already acted on administrative measures within its powers while collaborating with other stakeholders on the implementation.
According to him, the remaining 15 recommendations, including five priority areas, require action from the executive, legislature, judiciary, political parties, civil society, and the media and professional bodies .
Professor Mahmood Yakubu assured that INEC will continue to invite international observation groups to monitor all the processes leading to the 2027 general election.
He emphasized that international group reports play a vital role in improving electoral quality and credibility.
Earlier, Head of the EU delegation and Chief Observer of the 2023 mission, Barry Andrews applauded Nigeria’s role in shaping global democratic processes .
Mr Andrews noted that the EU has seen notable improvements made by INEC to strengthen democratic governance in Nigeria .
