Government at all levels has been called upon to map out sanctions against any misappropriation of funds to enhance a robust public health program at the grassroots.
The FCT Coordinator for the Control of Tuberculosis, Mr. Nathaniel Salifu, who made the call at a media parley in Abuja, explained that a robust public health program at all levels, especially in local governments, remains a key component in improving health care delivery for the citizenry.
Mr Salifu further advocated for the extension of the National Health Insurance Scheme to the non formal sector to reduce the burden of paying out-of-pocket for the high costs associated with frequent illnesses to reduce avoidable deaths.
He also solicited active community involvement to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of Primary Health Centres in their communities.
“For Nigeria to progress in controlling HIV, TB and Malaria, it should implement a combination of measures that include prevention and treatment, health education and promotion of community partnership.”
Also Mr. Isah Likita from the Kabusa Community called for reintroduction of the fumigation of the environment that was in place during President Obasanjo’s regime to reduce the burden of malaria, especially in the FCT.
Also, Mrs Deborah Azeez of the FCT Public Health urged the media to support spreading messages of preventive measures to avoid killer diseases.
