NUJ FCT Demands Action On Security, Press Freedom At Independence

todayOctober 1, 2025

Background

As Nigeria marks its 65th Independence Day, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, FCT Council, has called for urgent reforms to address insecurity, protect press freedom, and improve journalists’ welfare.

In a statement, the Chairman NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, said the recent killing of a journalist Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu highlighted the dangers faced by reporters in the country.

We can not celebrate independence while journalists are hunted or silenced and citizens live in fear,”.

Comrade Ike urged the federal government and security agencies to implement comprehensive security measures, including community and possible state policing, as well as surveillance technology in urban areas.

The NUJ also demanded better working conditions, fair pay, and psychosocial support for journalists exposed to trauma.

Journalists are not enemies of the state. They are the lifeblood of democracy,” the statement said.

The union dedicated the day to the memory of Maduagwu, describing her death as a national tragedy that should inspire stronger protections for journalists and citizens alike.
