todaySeptember 30, 2025

Background

The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has flagged off the construction of the Arterial Road S1 in Kaura District, a project expected to enhance connectivity, improve emergency response, and boost socio-economic activities in the area.

Performing the ground-breaking ceremony, the FCT Minister, Dr Nyesom Wike, described the two-kilometer road as a very important link that will open up Kaura District and improve the capital city’s road network.

Wike noted that Nigeria’s bid to host the next Commonwealth Games would depend largely on the provision of world-class infrastructure.

“The road is slightly above 2 kilometres but very very important road that will open up the Kaura district.”

“So, all these linkages, all these network of roads, is also geared towards showcasing to the world that we have a city that can host the next Commonwealth of Games”.

“When the committee comes and they see that the basic infrastructure is being provided, that gives us a leverage to be given the hosting right of the Commonwealth Games,” Wike said.

The Minister also highlighted the strategic importance of the project to emergency management, especially the FCT Fire Service.

“By the time this road is constructed, with the three span bridge, of course anywhere there is any fire incident and they are called upon, they will respond immediately,” Wike explained.

He urged the contractors to engage local residents, especially youths, in the construction work, stressing the importance of community participation.

He also commended the security agencies and area council leaders for their support, assuring that all six area councils in the FCT will benefit from ongoing projects under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking further, Wike expressed confidence in the completion of other major road projects, including the Airport-Kuje Expressway and the dualization of the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road.

He said the projects would drastically reduce travel time and open up the council areas for development.

On her part, the Minister of State for FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, reiterated the administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, saying the Arterial Road S1 project would not only ease movement within Kaura District but also enhance socio-economic development.

According to her, “It will also improve response time and operational efficiency of the FCT Fire Station located in the area, thereby strengthening public safety and disaster management.

The project will also open up Kaura District further for socio-economic development, boosting property values, investment, and the quality of life for residents.”

The project, being executed with a three-span bridge, is expected to transform Kaura District into a more accessible, safe, and economically vibrant community.
