A joint committee for the burial of the former speaker of the House of Representatives Chief Agunwa Anaekwe has announced his final burial rites.
At a Press Conference in Abuja, the Chairman of the committee Senator Osita Izunaso, Chairman, Senate Committee on Capital Market and Institutions after observing a minute silence, eulogised the late parliamentarian, stating that the passing of Chief Anaekwe at the “not-too-old” age of 69 came as a heavy shock; at a critical time when his people and Nigeria in general, needed him most.
Senator Izunaso who noted that the vast lessons of his life’s trajectory and huge wealth of experience in Nigeria’s political sphere would be missed urged all concerned to take solace in the predestined call and ultimate will of the Almighty God.
The Committee Chairman noted that there would be a Requem Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, Abuja on Thursday 2nd October by 12 pm followed by Night of Tributes @National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja by 4pm same day.
According to him, 16th October, 2025, by 9am, the National Assembly would hold a valedictory session in honour of the late ex- speaker while on the same day by 2pm, another Valedictory Session at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Awka would be held.
He said the late ex-speaker would on 17th October, 2025, by 9am, Lie-in-state at his Country Home in Adazi-ani with a funeral mass by 11am at St. Peters Catholic Church, Adazi-ani.
Senator Izunaso said Chief Agunwa Anaekwe would be buried on 18th October, 2025, by 1pm at his Country Home, Adazi Ani.
While paying tribute to the late ex-speaker, the former Governor of Anambra state Dr Chris Ngige said the late former speaker brought greater stability to the House of Representatives stressing that Chief Agunwa Anaekwe also gave him full support while challenging entrenched political godfathers and restoring civil service functionality in the state.

Anaekwe, who was Speaker at 36 years of age, was removed from office following the military coup that ousted the Ernest Shonekan-led Interim National Government by former military President General Sani Abacha, on November 17, 1993.
