FCT Area Councils Election : INEC Gives Directive For Commencement Of Campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC says political parties fielding candidates in the forth coming Area Council Election in the FCT can now commence campaigns ahead of the poll coming up February 2026.

A statement by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Sam Olumekun says it is in line with the provision of section 94 sub section 1 of the Electoral Act 2022.

The statement reminds political parties, candidates, and their supporters to avoid use of abusive language, physical attacks on opponents during campaigns, processions and meetings or destroying their campaign materials.

It also warns that all parties and candidates must be given unimpeded access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, public rallies and meetings.

The statement adds that section 95 sub 2 of the Electoral Act 2022 prohibits the use of incumbency to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate.
