The Mandate Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Health Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe has assured residents that there is no case of Ebola in the FCT.
Speaking at a joint briefing by the FCTA and officials of the Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. Fasawe, who said the suspected case of Ebola had been confirmed negative, also attested that the strike had been called off.
She explained that the administration is working closely with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, to strengthen border surveillance and ensure a high index of suspicion for travellers from countries experiencing epidemics.
“Ebola is not in the FCT. Confirmed and verified, and I can say that with authority. Ebola disease is not here, but if it comes here, FCT is ready with all necessary tools.”
“We are ready, we are prepared, and the system is in place. Every fever is not malaria. Our people must improve their health-seeking habits,” Fasawe said.
Clarifying the recent suspected case, Dr. Fasawe said the patient had travelled from Rwanda, which shares borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country currently battling Ebola.
She commended the patient, referred to as “Patient X,” for seeking immediate medical attention and praised Nisa Premier Hospital for promptly isolating the case and following infectious disease protocols.
Dr. Fasawe emphasized the importance of improving health-seeking habits among residents, stressing that not every fever is malaria.
She warned that symptoms such as fever with abnormal bleeding, from the nose, ears, eyes, anus, vagina, or urethra should be treated as medical emergencies and reported immediately.
She urged residents to take advantage of the facilities available while calling on the media and the public to help spread verified information to avoid creating unnecessary panic in the territory.
She further appealed to private hospitals to emulate the prompt reporting and adherence to protocols as demonstrated by Nisa Premier Hospital in this case, assuring that the FCT has toll-free numbers, emergency centers, and information materials to guide the public.
Dr Fasawe also hinted that the FCT Minister had given approval for the recruitment of about 300 health workers in the territory.
Meanwhile, the President of the FCT Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. George Ebong has commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for granting all their demands, which had resulted in the suspension of the strike.
“I want to make this announcement that today the Congress voted to suspend a strike that has been there for some time now. And this is because of the fact that the FCT minister had granted all our requests. ”
“We are grateful to him. We are grateful to every other person that made this possible… most especially the minister. We believe that only him could do this, and he has done it. ”
“We want to assure him that together, we will build a healthcare system for the citizens of Abuja to enjoy what we can offer them in terms of the medical healthcare system.”
Also, the National President of the Association of Resident Doctors, Dr. Osundara Zenith, who declared that work resumes fully from Monday, 22nd September 2025, lauded the intervention of Wike.
“We want to thank the FCT minister for his kind heartedness. He’s been very magnanimous.
The essence of all that we are doing is to draw his attention. It is not that we are political stooges, nobody is using us, and we did what is right to get his attention, and the attention was gotten and he attended to everything that was listed in our demands”.
“We want to appreciate him for being generous. We want to appreciate him for being a father. We also want to appreciate him because he is taking matters of health as a priority,” Zenith said.
