Wike Flags Off N1 Wuye–RRII Construction, Challenges Non-Performing Appointees to Brace Up

todaySeptember 19, 2025

Background

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Dr Nyesom Wike, has flagged off the construction of arterial road N1, linking Wuye District to Ring Road II.

During the ceremony in Abuja, Dr Wike warned non-performing Mandate Secretaries and Appointees to take responsibility for their failures.

Wike emphasized that his focus on infrastructural development in Abuja, was in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Minister maintained that the road projects were not for his personal benefit but for Nigerians and the overall economic prosperity of the nation.

“Nobody will blackmail me, nobody will stop me from doing what I think is right at the right time,” he said, adding that the development of critical roads would place Abuja among competitive cities in the world.

He criticized Mandate Secretaries who failed to deliver insisting that excuses would no longer be tolerated.

“If you are a Mandate Secretary of Education and nothing is happening in education, hold yourself responsible. If you are a Mandate Secretary of anything, and nothing is happening, then something is wrong with you, As a minister of our city, I don’t believe in stories and excuses. ” Wike said.

Responding to grievances raised by resident doctors, Wike explained that directives had already been issued to address their concerns, including employment and allowances.

He also disclosed that ₦25 billion had been earmarked in the 2025 FCT budget for healthcare alone.

On reports of planned protests against his focus on road projects only, the Minister confirmed that the Department of State Services (DSS) had briefed him but maintained that demonstrations were lawful and would not derail his agenda.

“Let us do something and know that we are doing it for the interest of Nigeria and for Nigerians,” he said.

Addressing speculations about his health, Wike dismissed reports that he had travelled to London for treatment of congestive heart failure as politically motivated.

He explained that he merely took time off for rest after two years of continuous work as FCT Minister.

“This job we are doing, there are people waiting for you. The day you drop, they will announce another person.
So, you must make sure while you are working, you also take time out and relax. So, I said, let me travel”.

“Each time I travel, I go with files to make sure work is done. But this time, I said I must travel without any file, because one has to be alive before satisfying other people, ” Wike said.
