Nigeria Edge Rwanda to Keep 2026 World Cup Qualifiers Hope Alive

todaySeptember 6, 2025

Background

Nigeria men’s senior national team, Super Eagles secured an all-important victory against the Amavubi Rwanda in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

Super Eagles who needed a win to keep their hopes to qualify, edged Rwanda 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyoz Nigeria.

The Amavubi who were sitting third in group C at kickoff held their host to a goalless first half.

Nigeria had the best chance in the first half as Victor Osimhen found the back of the net but his goal was ruled offside.

The first half was made worse for the hosts was when Osimhen was forced off due to an apparent leg injury following a challenge from a Rwandan defender.

However the Super Eagles found the back of the net in the 51st minute when early second half substitute, Tolu Arokodare scrabbled the ball into the back of the net through a Benjamin Fredrick shoot.

That was all Nigeria needed to secure all three points at home before they turn their attention to group leaders Bafana Bafana of South Africa, who they will play on Tuesday.

Super Eagles now sit third in their group with 10 points for World Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile South Africa are first with sixteen points and Benin closely second with 11 points.

Rwanda will face Zimbabwe in South Africa for their next Group C match, also on Tuesday.
