HOR Commits To Fair Allocation Of Resources To LGAs

todaySeptember 4, 2025

Background

‎The House of Representatives has reiterated its commitment to ensure fair allocation of resources to Local Government Areas across the federation.

The Chairman House Committee on Delegated Legislation, Mr. Richard Bamisile, gave the assurance  at the opening of a national retreat in Abuja organized in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments Of Nigeria, ALGON and Bagama Network LTD.

‎Mr. Bamisile also noted that strengthening the capacity of Local Government Councils to enact effective bye-laws would drive grassroots development.

‎The Chairman who noted that the workshop would draw from, ALGON’s experience in reviewing the Vertical Revenue Allocation Formula of the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, noted that such inputs would shape parliamentary efforts to ensure resources are allocated fairly and effectively.

‎He said the retreat was designed to enhance the bye-law-making process at the local government level, stressing that legislation at the grassroots must reflect the realities and aspirations of the people.

In his remarks, President of ALGON, Mr. Bello Lawal, described the workshop as a unique opportunity to give Local Governments, being the tier closest to the people a stronger and more direct voice in Nigeria’s fiscal architecture.

Represented by the Chairman Ekiti State Chapter, Mr Olusegun Samuel, Mr Lawal pledged that ALGON would not relent until Local Governments are adequately empowered with the resources needed to meet citizens’ expectations in line with constitutional provisions.

Mr Lawal also welcomed a recent call by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, RMAFC, to review the national revenue sharing formula, describing it as an opportunity for councils to gain a stronger voice in fiscal planning.

‎The retreat with the theme “Enhancing Legislative Capacity of Local Government Councils and the Review of the Vertical Revenue Allocation Formula,” was organised to share insights on how to strengthen local governance, and improve quality of life for citizens at the grassroots level.
