In a significant move to improve health care delivery among the indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory, the Rotary Club of Asokoro has embarked on its yearly one hundred surgical operations to Cataracts and Glaucoma patients in Asokoro district hospital in Abuja.
The 25th President of the Rotary Club of Asokoro, Rotarian Chinagorom Onuorah Lynda, at her Awards and Investiture in Abuja, said the club’s core values was aimed at touching lives through various humanitarian services to the less privileged in the society.
“Rotary Club is an International humanitarian organization bringing people of like minds from different backgrounds together for the purpose of touching lives through various charity work especially among the most vulnerable and less privileged in remote areas in focus.”
‘As the 25th President of the Rotary Club of Asokoro, I will stick to the club’s guidelines in our seven cardinal areas of focus beginning from Education Literacy, as we have started providing the basic infrastructure in community schools in the FCT, by providing a conducive learning environment for pupils expecially the girl child.”
“We have trained and empowered women with grinding engines in rural communities and different skills acquisitions such as making soaps, detergents, body cream, pasteries, among others.”
“We are also into Maternal child health care and had carried out various projects in collaboration with our district which is the overall head of Rotary Club of Asokoro, last month we went to Masaka General Hospital and donated delivery kits, mosquito nets and drugs for pregnant women both pre-natal and post-natal”.
“My club personally went to Asokoro district hospital signed an MoU with them to enable them embark on surgical operation for 100 indigent Cataracts and Glaucoma patients annually after donating mosquito nets, drugs, cash and even paid for blood transfusion for over 50 patients on their hospital beds. We don’t get paid on what we do. We are just members who put our resources together carrying out various humanitarian activities in different communities to give the less privileged a sense of belonging”.
“I want the government, civil society organisations, NGOs and well-meaning Nigerians to know that the Rotary Club has one of the most seamless transmission with the highest level of transparency and accountability in our mode of operation, so your partnership is highly needed for more effective service delivery to further compliment the efforts of the federal government.”
“The Rotary Club Leadership hierarchy is a top notch.As i am standing here as the 25th president of the Asokoro Rotary Club of 2025/2026, we already have a president elect for 2026/2027 Rotary year to learn from me just like I learn’t from my Immediate Past President, so our objectives are very clear, she added.”
On his part, the President elect for the 2026/2027 Rotary year and also a member of the Rotary Foundation Cadre of Technical Advisers, Dr. Ignatius Emeka Onyekwere said the Club has signed an MoU with Asokoro district hospital to the tune of over N5m to carry out a free surgical operation to indigent patients with Cataracts and Glaucoma yearly.
He however added that, as part of the Rotary’s Club focus on water sanitation and hygiene, the club has provided basic infrastructure in some public schools in the FCT, such as building of toilets, provision of chairs/desks and fixing of leaking roofs for pupils among others.
Also speaking, the past Assistant Governor of District 927, also a District Chairman of the Emergency Relief and Disaster Management, Rotarian Francess Bekeh said the Club is a platform that gives people the opportunity to do what makes them happy by putting smiles on the faces of other people especially the needy in society.
“Rotary creates the avenue to do things that brings relief to the needy because there are people who have the funds but don’t know how to reach out to the less privileged and the Club provides that platform.And luckily for us the next Rotary international president is a Nigerian in the person of Babalola Yinka and that’s the seamless and transparent succession my president talked about, she added”.
