Background

Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions Bayelsa Queens continued dominant performance at the CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B Qualifiers, by defeating Benin Republic’s Sam Nelly FC 4-1 at the Stade du Lycée Scientifique, Cote d’Ivoire on Saturday August 30, 2025.

The victory capped off a perfect group stage for the Nigerian side, who finished with nine points from three matches.

The Prosperity Ladies made their intentions clear early on, with Seimeyeha Akekoromowei opening the scoring in the 14th minute. The pressure mounted on the Sam Nelly defense, and it was only a matter of time before Shakirat Moshood doubled the lead in the 35th minute.

The Beninese side, however, found a glimmer of hope just before halftime when Kalu Favour capitalized on a rare defensive lapse to pull one back in the 44th minute, making it 2-1 at the break.

Bayelsa Queens quickly extinguished any comeback hopes, with Alaba Olabiyi restoring the two-goal cushion in the 55th minute with a fine finish.

Akekoromowei sealed the victory four minutes later with her second of the match (59’), capping a commanding performances.

Following the match, an elated Head Coach Whyte Ogbonda praised his team’s focus and determination.

“The girls showed great character today. We knew Sam Nelly would fight hard, especially after getting a goal back, but we didn’t lose our composure. Our strategy for the second half was to regain control quickly, and they executed it perfectly. We are taking this tournament one game at a time, and I am proud of how they have handled the pressure so far. This performance is a good sign for what’s to come.”

Also, player of the Match Seimeyeha Akekoromowei shared her excitement, stating that the victory was a result of the teams hard work.

“It feels great to contribute to the team’s success. This victory means a lot to us. We have worked hard to get to this point, and we are not finished yet. We came here to win the trophy and qualify for the main Champions League, and every player on this team is committed to that goal. We will continue to play our best in every match.”

Bayelsa Queens now turn their focus to crucial semi-final clash against Group A’s runners up, USFA of Burkina Faso.

The other semi-final will see Group A winners, FC Inter d’Abidjan of Côte d’Ivoire, take on the runners-up of Group B, Ghana’s Police Ladies FC.

Both semi-finals are scheduled to be played at the same venue in Yamoussoukro.
