The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Benjamin Kalu, has urged citizens of the South East geopolitical zone to take part in the ongoing voter registration exercise, warning that poor turnout could weaken the region’s political influence in future elections.
Kalu, in a statement issued in Abuja, said he was concerned about reports of low participation in the Continuous Voter Registration being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission in the region.
He describes voter registration as a crucial step towards ensuring that the voices of the South East are heard and stresses that stronger participation would allow the region to exercise its franchise fully and choose its leaders.
“If we want development, we must show we want to be part of the decision-making mechanism, and that starts by preparing to vote and be voted for,” he said. “Beyond party lines, let the region show our strength by the volume of registered voters from the Igbo nation.”
The Deputy Speaker calls on traditional leaders, community groups, and youth organizations to mobilize citizens to seize the opportunity and register en masse.
