The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has revealed plans to clampdown on traffic offenders and the growing influx of destitutes in the territory.
To this end, the FCT Minister, Dr Nyesom Wike, has issued a directive to relevant security agencies for the full enforcement of this operation, noting that their activities poses serious threat to public safety .
Speaking after a security meeting at Life Camp, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Saka Adewale, emphasized that the administration will no longer tolerate traffic violations and the presence of street beggars who endanger the city’s orderliness.
According to the CP, “Traffic offences such as driving with covered number plates and driving against traffic have been identified as major contributors to crime within the FCT. Anyone driving against traffic is essentially on a suicide mission. These acts pose a serious threat, and there will be a total clampdown. Offenders will be documented to help us understand their behaviors and prevent future occurrences.”
As part of the ongoing Operation Sweep initiative, the CP disclosed that over 675 vehicles have been impounded within one month for various traffic violations, including lack of documentation, use of tinted glass without approval, and operating illegal transport services like unregistered ride-hailing vehicles.
He also revealed that more than 273 destitutes were arrested and taken to the Bwari center, where they are currently undergoing profiling and receiving temporary care before being relocated to their places of origin.
“Most of these arrests are linked to illegal street begging, loitering, and in some cases, drug peddling,” Adewale stated. “Those involved in drug-related offenses have been handed over to the NDLEA, while the Social Development Secretariat (SDS) is handling cases involving destitutes and beggars.”
He further noted that the FCT Minister has instructed all service commanders to intensify efforts to rid the city of street beggars and miscreants who pose environmental and security challenges.
“The operation has so far recorded significant success, and based on the gains made, it will be sustained and expanded,” the CP affirmed.
