D’Tigress Clinch Fifth Women’s Afrobasket title in Côte d’Ivoire

Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have secured a fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Afrobasket title by out classing Mali 78-64 on Sunday, August 3, 2025, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

D’Tigress, who have been on an incredible winning streak, demonstrated their prowess on both ends of the court, fending off a determined Malian side that sought to end Nigeria’s reign.

The first quarter saw Mali come out with impressive intensity, setting the pace and taking control of the game early on, finishing the quarter up 26-21.

However, Nigeria in the second quarter responded and chipped away at Mali’s lead, tightening up their defense and finding their rhythm on offense, by halftime leveled the score at 41-41.

With the score tied, coach Rena Wakama’s ladies came out in the third quarter with renewed focus and energy taking a 61-56 lead in the quarter, capitalizing on Mali’s turnovers.

Despite Mali’s valiant effort in the final quarter to mount a comeback, Nigeria maintained their composure and held on to their lead. They continued to play with the confidence of champions, answering every Malian basket with one of their own. The final buzzer sounded with Nigeria winning 78-64.

Led by head coach Rena Wakama, the team has maintained its position at the pinnacle of African basketball. The win extends their winning streak in the tournament, a record that cements their status as a powerhouse in the sport.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s captain Amy Okonkwo, was awarded the Most Valuable Player of the tournament.

Beyond the title, the victory also holds significant implications for the future. By winning the Afrobasket, D’Tigress has also automatically secured a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifiers.
